The ceremony of the 2nd Fudan-Zhongzhi Science Award and the 3rd Fudan Science and Innovation Forum was held in Shanghai on December 17th, with the world’s top scientists gathering to discuss and exchange their views on the cutting edge of global technology and innovation trends.


Winner of the 2017 Fudan-Zhongzhi Science Award and this year’s Nobel Prize in Physics, Professor Rainer Weiss, gives his report on “LIGO and the Discovery of Gravitational Waves”.

Also giving his report on “LIGO and Gravitational Waves” was Professor Barry Clark Barish, another winner of the 2017 Fudan-Zhongzhi Award and the Nobel Prize in Physics.

World-renowned experimental physicist, winner of the 1976 Nobel Prize in Physics, and chairperson of the Fudan-Zhongzhi Science Award Committee, Professor Ding Zhaozhong, announces the winners of the 2nd Fudan-Zhongzhi Science Award.

Professor Ding Zhaozhong, the famous experimental physicist, winner of the 1976 Nobel Prize in Physics, and Chairperson of the Fudan-Zhongzhi Science Award Committee, announced the winners of the 2nd Fudan-Zhongzhi Science Award. The two keynote lectures, “A New Kilogram in 2018: The Biggest Revolution in Metrology since the French Revolution” and “Global Quantum Communication Network and Future Prospects”, were given respectively by Professor Klaus von. Klitzing, the 1985 Nobel laureate in Physics, and Professor Pan Jianwei, member of the Chinese Academy of Science and vice-president of the USTC, who shared with the audience the state-of-the-art research discoveries and innovations.


Professor Ding, Professor Klitzing, Mr. Jiao, President Xu and Mr. Wang, among others, present the certificates and trophies to the winners.


Also present at the Forum were Mr. Jiao Yang, the Party Secretary of Fudan, Professor Xu Ningsheng, president of Fudan and member of the Chinese Academy of Science, Mr. Wang Wei, chairperson of Zhongzhi Enterprise Group (sponsor of the Award), as well as delegates from other universities. Professor Klitzing, President Xu and Mr. Wang presented the Award certificates and trophies to the winners.

The three Fudan-Zhongzhi winners paid their visit to Fudan on the evening of 16th and had a conversation about the wonders of the universe and the scientific research and exploration with groups of Fudan undergraduates, postgraduates, and students from Fudan’s affiliated highschool. “The future, for the young scientists, is bright with hope.” They urged the students to find the real interest in whatever research they did, and encouraged them to seek new inspiration from the knowledge in other fields at the same time that they focused on their own specific area.


As the only scientific consultant of the sci-fi blockbuster Interstellar,   Professor Thorne came to the Interstellar movie screening on the evening of 17th to tell the story behind the screen with Chinese fans.


The Fudan-Zhongzhi Science Award was co-founded by Fudan University and Zhongzhi Enterprise Group in 2015, and is aimed at honoring the world’s scientists that have made significant contribution in mathematics, physics and biology. The name list of the winners of the 2nd Award, which is for distinguished physicists, was announced this July. The winners will share a prize offered by Zhongzhi totaling ¥3,000,000, alongside individual certificates and trophies.

The Fudan Science and Innovation Forum, hosted by Fudan University, organized by Fudan Institute for Advanced Study, and sponsored by Zhongzhi Enterprise Group, was launched in 2015 in response to the nation’s innovation-driven development strategy. The Forum has the aim of promoting Shanghai’s transformation into a science and innovation hub with global influence by building up an international platform for intellectual exchange and sharing that is focused on the global technology frontiers and innovation trends.

The 3-day Forum, which consisted of a main forum and three sub-forums, was attended by over 400 guests who are active members of global academic, business and political communities, with themes ranging from big data, quantum physics, and innovation and entrepreneurship, among others.
